Fear de fear fear - navigating the unfamiliar

An adage goes like this, ‘when things get more difficult, be more determined than ever to succeed’. This implies that no matter how tough it is out there we are encouraged to keep pushing because it is only through determination that we can succeed. When the odds are against us, it is very tempting to choose the easiest way out – to give up. When we give up, we will never know what lies at the other end of the ocean. Also, when we are afraid, we give ourselves all sorts of reasons to stop trying.

This is how fear works – fear makes us paint pictures that magnify a problem and create monsters out of them. Instantly, our bodies react to the messages we are sending to them through signs like nausea, running stomach, vomiting, increased heartbeats, sweating, nervousness, anxiety and joint pains, all because we fed our insecurities or fears, making them seem insurmountable and giving them a larger-than-life importance.

‘Fear de fear fear’ as they say in Nigeria (meaning that the enemy of fear is courage). When we are afraid, we certainly find it hard to make the right choices. When we are in doubt, we also make the wrong choices. So going back to my post (Opportunities come to the one who is ready) about positive and negative mindsets, the strategy that differentiates one from the other is having the courage to jump on opportunities, knowing what you want, opening your mind to limitless opportunities and avoiding the feelings of self-doubt which serve no other purpose than to set you back.

Even when you are in doubt or do not believe in yourself, just give it a try.
