Banky W's Wedding: A Badass Business Move (find out how...)
First published on Facebook on 8 December 2017.
Wedding business is big business in Nigeria and Banky is a Business Man (according to his Instagram bio). From the wedding planners, to the decors, food, cake, makeup, clothes, photogs, almost everyone is a big winner. Enter Banky W and Adesua Etomi's wedding which started November 11, 2017, rubbing off the fame of The Wedding Party movie, trended with the hashtag
#BAAD2017 and broke the Nigerian Internet
- Most Nigerians on social media followed the events from the traditional wedding at Landmark Events Centre in Lagos to the white wedding in South Africa as well as their honeymoon.
If the planning went as I think, they may not have spent as money as people think they did, rather they would have capitalised on the fame around them to get vendors to provide for the events at a lesser fee, banking on the fact that the wedding would boost businesses. A win-win situation.
The Business Move:
1. Major career boost for Banky and Adesua.
The wedding couldn't have come at a better time than it it did. We are all still having a hangover on the success of The Wedding Party (2016) which is the highest grossing Nigerian movie of all time in Nigerian cinemas (Wikipedia) followed by A Trip to Jamaica. We have also been eagerly expecting the release of The Wedding Party 2, since it's announcement mid this year.
The chemistry and beauty BankyW and Adesua shared on screen definitely sealed them in our hears as Nigeria's most beloved couple. This movie with MoAbudu - business mogul and strategist - as one of the producers, definitely amplified their career. Adesua and Banky are new faces to Nigerian movies. Banky's musical career has relatively been quiet. Banky did not need to be stuck in a particular industry. He explored the need to swap and continue to explore his creativity.
2. Make or break The Wedding Party 2?
10 December 2017 is the Grand World Premiere. With the super trending wedding of Banky and Adesua, there is no dulling with the anticipation for this movie. First of all, Banky got engaged to Edesua, then Adesua had her bridal shower, followed by the weddings. We all saw these unfold in-between the two movie releases. By 15 December 2017, the Wedding Party 2 will be released in cinemas nationally and selected cinemas world wide.
Here come the BIG questions - having watched the real "wedding party" (Banky and Adesua's real wedding), will there still be the appetite to watch another wedding party or will the magic of #BAAD2017 rub off positively? Will the sequel break the record of the first? Will it surpass the 2nd, 3rd and 4th highest grossing movies in Nigeria which currently are A Trip to Jamaica, 10 Days in Sun City and Fifty, respectively?
3. The powerful hands without whom there would be no wedding magic.
All the beauty, glitz and glam of #BAAD2017 will not be complete without these creative minds -
Mai Atafo.Wedding outfits designer par excellence!. If you didn't know Mai Atafo before now, #BAAD2017 and the The Wedding Party movie made sure you did. He designed the bridal dresses and the suits worn by most of the leading characters. He also designed Adesua's wedding gown and Banky's wedding suit which they wore at their white wedding in South Africa.
From the bridal shower to the weddings, vendors were hyped.
What is visibility without photographers, bloggers, journalists and videographers? The photogs were well recognised on many posts from the wedding - Kelechi Amadi Obi, Chux Anthony, Keziie, Click Art, Seyi Charles George Photography, Anuel Modebe. Their shots were simply amazing.
Due recognition was also given to:
the designers of the various outfits worn by bride and groom - Mai Atafo, Toju Foyeh, Tubo.
Wedding planners; ArbellaEvents, Bisola of Trendy Bee Events, Tum Socials.
Hair, nail an makeup artists; T.A La Mode Beauty, Hair by Koko Lounge, Dolled by Nueye, Swash Caramel.
Venues, florals, decorations; Landmark Events Centre, Something Labelled, Partifully yours, Blue Velvet Marquee, BCG Events.
Cakes and cocktails; Cakes by Say Cheese, Estee Cakes, BB.Mix.
Music; TuFace, DJ Exclusive, Tiwa Savage.
And more.
4. Tourism.
Not just for Nigeria, the wedding did some showcasing for South Africa too - SAA Airlines, Mandela House, Zebula Golf Estate and Spa, Table Mountain.
In closing my analysis of the wedding, I won't miss out the power of social media. Wait for it...
1. In social media you spend next to nothing compared to TV, radio, newspaper or billboard adverts.
2. Planning from start to finish and paying attention to every detail is important to achieve desired results.
3. Use at least one unique hash tag eg. #BAAD2017 across socials.
4. Use socials that you have mastered. Don't have too many handles than you an grow. 2-3 are ok seriously.
5. Network, network, network. Don't do it alone. It doesn't work. That's why it's called social media. Repost, cross post, tag, share, like, follow.
Hope you enjoyed my musings. Lots of Love,
Nk Venuss
